A New Design For The European Khet Board

Innovention Toys are in the process of designing a smaller, streamlined version of the Khet board exclusively for Europe. They have also just revamped the current design to comply with the latest EU toy safty regulations and it should be out by late next year. This will also help with the game for the companies in Germany, so the German's will be able to enjoy Khet as well.

The Khet United Kingdom Championship Review

This was the first Khet Championship to be held in the United Kingdom on Saturday 16 August 2008.  The tournament was opened by The Deputy Mayor, Councillor Stephen Holmes, with a great and funny speech that set the ball rolling for the rest of the day.  Everyone commented on how great it was that the Deputy Mayor, had time to talk to everyone and his gift of a shield was greatly appreciated.  After this the Deputy Mayor played a few games of Khet with the Classic set up and then the championship kicked off.

The Khet UK Champion 2008 Jim Payne

After the first two rounds (a Classic set up), the expected players were doing well but some were struggling at this early stage then it was time for a rest, after which, it was back to the games in hand.  After round three and four-the knock out rounds (using the Imhotep set up), Jim  (who only came to watch the championship but was convinced by other contestants to play in the tournament) came out on top of the list but had never played with the Eye Of Horus which would be used for the next round.  He had to play some of those who had not got through to the next round.  In fact, all those who were not in the quarter-finals, played each other with games they had not played before (using, the Eye Of Horus, mostly).

The unveiling of the new 3D Tower Of Kadesh saw everyone loving this new expansion, not seen outside the USA and lots of photos were being taken.

The final was an exciting affair, using the first set up 3D Classic. Jim Payne (who was playing silver and would move first) had a rocky start with everyone gasping on the big screen as he tried to get used to the new item.  There was an uneasy silence as everyone could see Michael W Tank getting into winning moves and the game ended in quick time and the fastest of the games.

The next set up was Imhotep 3D and had Michael (going first) playing silver.  This game lasted longer as both players were getting used to the tower moving back and forth, left and right.  Pieces moving up and down on the 3D board (like watching a Star Trek chess  game) as players tried to get a better wining position.  To get even, Jim had to win or else it was over for him but he managed to beat the pressure and win the game to the relief of those who wanted him to win.

The last set up was Hetepheres 3D, this was the most exciting game of the three, which saw the players move quickly on the board.  Each player moved his piece, fired his laser and then hit his chess clock button and this rapid fire lasted for 10 minutes each before both started to slow down as the play took its toll on their mind. The tower moved all over the board, from one end to the other and then to the sides, with lots of pieces moving on the top tier of the board and then to the bottom. Time was ticking away and before long both players started to run out of time with the last ten minutes being hectic for both players.  Jim was the one who was running out of time the most and Michael had missed a chance to win the game before Jim had a great couple of moves. The end had to come and no one wanted the championship to end with the clock running out of time when, suddenly, Jim gave a surprise move and won the game.  A great cheer rang out among the crowd while the other half were disappointed for Michael, and they had an unnerving silence but cheered up later.  There were some passers by who came to see the final and were very happy to see the game in all it’s excitement and decided to put their name for the next tournament.

After the prizes were given out, everyone shared their experience of what seems to have been a wonderful day for Khet in the United Kingdom.  For the list of the winners go to the Hall Of Fame link.

Review of Khet on YouTube

Have you ever wondered what playing Khet can be like?

This is a brilliantly funny episode of slapstick and special effects that will have you reeling in your seat by your computer.  It is a mixture of the Matrix meets the Keystone Cops but with a touch of Hollywood with the lasers burning the pieces up; yes even the mirrors burn baby burn!  You have the haunting music behind the scenes that will stay with you for ages after but is up beat at the same time.  You get to see the classic "pie in face" routine as well as drinks being cast and an egg with great timing. Then the scene is set to go Picasso with mad torching and throwing burning game boards at each other. A very surreal film with abstract art thrown in for good measure but ending in a horror story way, revealing that it will start all over again at the next playing.

The Latest News on the 3D Tower of Kadesh

The towers are now on sale in the USA, however, Innovention Toys, will not launch the extension internationally until they have a period to test it out in the US.  Therefore it will not be for sale in the EU until holiday season.

A Review of the Tower Of Kadesh

Ever wondered what 3D Chess would be like in the Star Trek Series?  Did you think it would be harder to play than 2D chess?  Well I don't know the answer but what I can tell you is that the new Tower Of Kadesh is brilliant to play and can extend your game.  It is fast to set up your tower and the rules make it easy to understand, so you can start playing within five minutes or ten at the most.  You have three set ups that you can use, one of which is new (Hetepheres 3D), plus the Classic and Imhotep 3D  versions.

Tower Of Kadesh Box Front

Tower Of Kadesh Box Back

The tower goes into the middle of the board before the game starts and then you take your move as in a normal Khet game.  You can either move your piece (as in a normal game) or move it onto or off the tower.  You can move the tower one place in any direction that is not occupied by a piece or turn it a quarter (like the Djed piece) before firing your laser to end your go.  On the top tier, you can not move your Pharaoh into the corner but otherwise you can move it anywhere on the top level or second level.  Each set up has some good tactics that can improve your game but if you make a mistake, it can be over a lot quicker.  Moving the tower makes it a better game to play as you could find yourself getting out of trouble where you would lose in the 2D set up.  Moving pieces on to the tower and then off to make a good killing is a bonus but you have to watch where the laser will go or you can find yourself in trouble.  It is also good to see the top board moving all over the bottom board as pieces are picked up and put down on different parts of the playing field.  It is also worth mentioning that you will have to keep looking around the bottom board, or turning it to see behind the column, opposite of where you are playing, or you might forget where the pharaoh or other pieces are.  Once you get used to the 3D board, it is really fun and is harder to work out a strategy.  All in all it is great fun and well worth buying.

The New Imseti Board Winner

The poll winner board from Khet Players UK

The Khet Players UK would like to thank all of you who voted at the Khet set up configuration poll.  Out of the five versions to try out, Imseti C was chosen but was closely contested by board B with the narrowest of margins.  I have now included Imseti board C in the new set up configurations page along with the popular Khufu set up.  There will be a short questionnaire at the Khet Players Yahoo address for any views that you want to give us.  Happy gaming and enjoy.  If you have any set up configurations that you would like to share, contact us at either address and we may put them on the website.

The Khet Players UK Yahoo Group are merging with the Khet Google Group and sharing the resources, information, ideas and views of Khet Players world wide.  We hope this will improve the service that you have all expected of us and hope you enjoy the new structure.  The new merged group will be called Khet Players at the Google address and we would love to hear your comments on what you think.  The old Yahoo address will be maintained for the Khet United Kingdom Championship Tournament and the e-mail for this will remain the same.  Click on the Link below to go to the Google address.  The e-mail address for Google is khet@googlegroups.com .

Khet Online

If you have an Internet browser and love playing Khet there is now an online version that you can play or watch at Ascending Integration. All you need to do is install the Silverlight software and then create a username to start playing.  It is fun and is the only online version I know about, I had great fun playing the game.  There is also the "invite a friend" link, so if no one is about and you know one of your friends are home you can let them know and once they sign up you can play against them online.  You may have to download the latest Silverlight software periodically as it is updated every so often.

The Easy To Use Create Your Own Set Up

Ever wondered how you could get your new set up copied or printed to show others how it looks, well now you can do just that with the new "Create Your Own Set Up" at Khet.com.  Here is an example of Imhotep from the original set up to give you an idea of what it looks like before you start your configuration and below how to use it.   Below the create set up details, you will find new "B" configurations that it could end up looking like.

It is easy to use and you no longer have to use a draw program to show your set up. Just go to the Khet.com set up page and choose Classic, Imhotep or Dynasty as a starting point then just use the mouse to drag and drop the pieces anywhere on the board and you can also rotate any piece by going to the bottom of the page and clicking the button. You can take screen shots or print your finished product and then share with all your friends-it's that easy to do.  There is not an Eye Of Horus yet but this is enough to get you going. To save your work in HTML that you can embed on your website or pass to other websites, you can hit the submit button, then you can copy and paste it like the images below.

Alternative to Nefertiti A, Horemheb A, Tutankhamun A and Ay A on the set up page.

Nefertiti B

Horemheb B

Tutankhamun B

Ay B

Try out these three alternatives and see if you like them compared to the A games that are on the set up page. I decided that they were not as good or as competitive, which for me, was a great disappointment and made the better versions for the new set ups. Rather than destroy them, I thought I would put them on this page under the "make your own set up" section to show you alternatives of how you can make them from the Imhotep start. Why not let us know your feelings about these minor set ups and if you like the A or B games at the Khet Players Group.
